I have some of the symbol problems reported, particularly in the calendar settings (but things still work if you click where the icons are supposed to be). However, some of the described problems make me wonder if you're using the 8.5 mail template. For example, folders have a folder symbol with a square box with a plus or minus icon, not a twistie. I see these with Snow Leopard. I also see the sametime status icon, for example. In the mailbox, when I select documents, there's not a checkmark, but the whole line in the view is highlighted, and this works in Snow Leopard. In some older apps that used to show the checkmark when documents were selected, I don't see the checkmarks and only know documents are selected by the number showing in the status bar. But as mentioned, this is not a problem in the mailbox.
